freshman year

long playlist, long year
A playlist I made at the end of freshman year. I realize it's probably stuff you have heard before, but got to stay true to what last year sounded like.  ;)

remember me

new in the shop.
When stupid Michaels discontinues not-so-stupid wooden cradle boards, I have to get stupid "wood squares".

Just kidding - I'm pretty sure Michaels holds the keys to the universe. But those cradle boards were bomb.

Just made this. Mainly acrylics, matte medium, stamps/dye ink, and watercolor pastels/pencils.

 My second mixed media.

Canvas. 2012. Acrylics, molding paste, colored pencil, accents, sharpie, stamp/dye ink, scrapbook paper, sketch paper, a little bit of cardboard.

Dirty Girls

Dirty Girls is a documentary made by a high school senior in the mid-1990's, set to the tune of the noise that disturbed middle and high school culture caused by a group of teenage feminists and self-proclaimed riot girrrls.
Apparently Dirty Girls has made the rounds on Tumblr and what have you for quite a while, but I just came across it yesterday (thanks, Rookie). If you salivate over documentaries (*cough*) or simply want to pretend you are in an actual feminist movement from the actual 90's (oh, well I guess that applies too), then don't miss out on this.

And some cat drawings . . .

Cecilia (The Virgin Suicides)

"The trees, like lungs, fill with air. My sister, the mean one, is pulling my hair."

This one was kind of me trying to make tangible my brain explosion after watching The Virgin Suicides (I read the book first, which is actually not a habit of mine, so I feel accomplished). I was pretty confused after reading the book. What was the point? Just . . . what was this? It wasn't until I watched the movie that everything (mostly, still a little fuzzy) made sense. We are made to focus on the Lisbon girls, naturally, as we see the story through the boys' perspective. Seeing the boys as separate people in the movie, and being able to see the story play out as a separate party, made me realize that it was the boys who carried the message.
The quote that lays over Cecilia's eyes is her own words. This might be my favorite quote from fiction. It's kind of funny, if you think about it.
On canvas. Prismacolor colored pencils, acrylics, molding paste, matte medium, glass bead gel for mediums. Sketch paper, colored cardstock, china marker, lace, printer paper and ink, string, faux flowers and charm for accents.

The days that I was locked in my room by my parents to finish this thing (I got a C in class for incompleteness :)), my life revolved around The Postal Service, Phoenix, The Strokes, The Pixies, Savoir Adore, Best Coast, m83, Kings of Leon, Black Kids, MGMT, and M.I.A.

Beatrice

I think I named her Beatrice . . .

Murdoc

Murdoc

my Murdoc

Murdoc Niccals, self-proclaimed leader of Gorillaz, in Micron Ink Pens (03 and 05) and pencil.
I thought that out of most Gorillaz hits, "Clint Eastwood" gives the best vibe of Murdoc. "Clint Eastwood" is the first single from the first Gorillaz album, "Gorillaz" :0

 * Yeah, I know, I left out the Satanist tattoo. I didn't really know how I felt about that, not exactly being a Satanist myself. I thought about it and ended up regretting it, coming to the conclusion that it was censorship and I don't believe that art should be censored :) *

"I ain't happy, I'm feeling glad
I got sunshine in a bag
I'm useless, but not for long
The future is coming on"

middle of nowhere playlist

Middle of Nowhere: (1) turtles all the way down by sturgill simpson (2) the first time I ran away by m. ward (3) box of rain by the grateful dead (4) calico by widowspeak (5) coffins by misterwives (6) civilian by wye oak (7) cold desert by kings of leon (8) blue moon by beck (9) strangers by the efts (10) who you are by the mountain goats

Maybe a playlist for people geographically in the middle of nowhere. Perhaps a playlist for people stuck in the middle of the endless road that is the mind. Possibly a playlist for people who are somewhere and think they are (going) nowhere. Actually a playlist for people who like to think with forehead pressed against the window while travelling (preferably driving) through the middle of nowhere. Definitely a playlist for anyone looking for a sense of direction . . . but maybe likes being a little lost.

Tavi, the Creator

Tavi, The Creator
an attempt

Even as a little girl, I never was a fangirl. I faked liking Barbies to keep the playdates regular, burying the dolls alive under my bed after the coast was clear. I later realized that I should just accept my inability to be a fan. Watching girls my age become fanatic aliens over things like Twilight and One Direction, I knew I was on the outside, but at least I still had somewhat control of myself (you know, compared to them).
My first landmark fangirl-dom revolves around Rookie editor/creator/mastermind/goddess Tavi Gevinson (yes, you called it). It all started when I bought Rookie Yearbook One a year after it was released. I had tried avoiding it in the aisles of Barnes and Nobles in search of reading books, "real books" my mom said. Eventually, I got the idea to go out with my grandma and acquired my first piece of Rookie. I remember reading it on the car ride home, feeling like I was in a trance. I came back to California a different person. And (dramatic, I know) it was the truth.
So naturally, when it came to portrait drawing, there is no other face than Tavi Gevinson's that I would sketch on the FIRST PAGE of a NEW SKETCHBOOK (a big deal if you ask me). The nose in my attempt is too narrow, the eyes off a bit. That may symbolize my inexperience and Tavi may symbolize a person (an idol) that was a mark in the time of my life that I discovered a lot about a lot.

take a picture, it will last longer. take a polaroid, it will last forever.

thanks tabby, nicole, paulina, coco, and zoe for playing polaroid with me.

I think that we all have a cancer, some just more than others. Whether we go crazy in public or crazy in quiet, it is still there in everyone.
